SLAMS Arizona's Immigrations Law
Calls it a THREAT to American Latinos!!!
Mexican President Felipe Calderon was in WASHINGTON recently for President Barack Obama's SECOND White House DINNER where the PRESIDENT hosted a WHO'S WHO of the LATIN world including Eva Longoria, Carlos Slim, George Lopez and Ken Salazar among many others (JLo's invite was reportedly LOST in the mail..it happens folks). Anyhoo, HIGH on the list of topics mentioned by Calderon in his various speeches was DRUGS (no pun intended, or maybe it was, we forget...cause we're stoned...NOT!) but ALSO the recently passed IMMIGRATION law in ARIZONA.
For those of you who DON'T know, Arizona just passed a SWEEPING immigration bill which ESSENTIALLY empowers police to stop anyone they have REASONABLE SUSPICION to believe is an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT and ask for their "PAPERS". (or as they used to say in GERMANY, "ze papers") Now, we ADMIT that we have not READ the Arizona law YET (we workin' on it) but those who have (we hope) are ALL UP IN ARMS!!
Mexican President CALDERON said the law “introduces a terrible idea: using racial profiling as a basis for law enforcement.” OBAMA called the law "misdirected" and SAMMY SOSA offered free skin rejuvenation and blue contacts to all ARIZONA residents! Gracias, Sammy.
However, those on the OTHER SIDE have said there are PROVISIONS in the law to PREVENT racial profiling??( LIKE WHAT? ).....
Now, we at THEBOCHINCHE.COM are all for border control, but HOW exactly do you determine one's legal status by LOOKING at them?? Trust, Niño's there are MANY days we leave the CASA lookin' real "cha cha" ourselves! Would you stop THE BOCHINCHE, frisk us and throw us AGAINST the wall??? what if we asked nicely?...(snap snap).
'Course some OTHER folks have said Calderon has a WHOLE LOT OF NERVE criticizing Arizona since his FAILED war on drugs, government CORRUPTION and lack of border control is FUELING the exodus of immigrants from MEXICO. (just to be clear, WE didn't say that, THEY did...so don't SHOOT the messenger....PLEASE!)
Even MORE folks are SAYING (people love to talk, what can we say) that maybe this will spur THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT to finally DO something since IMMIGRATION is supposedly the domain of the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT and NOT the STATE government.
As it stands, this debate is ONLY getting started. Attorney General Eric Holder is threatening to SUE (even tho' we hear he ain't read the law EITHER, so we don't feel so bad) while protests and boycotts have been put in place by DOZENS of cities and local governments. The ONLY Good thing this law has DONE is GALVANIZE the LATIN community to stand TOGETHER in SOLIDARITY with our brothers in ARIZONA!
