DOMINICAN BORN HAITIAN ACTIVIST ,
SONIA PIERRE PASSES ON( WE WILL MISS YOU !!!!!! )





   There are some people that if you never had the opportunity to meet them , you will forever be at a loss . Martin Luther King was one , Malcolm X was another , Sonia Pierre is also in that category . This was a Dominican born Haitian Woman who almost from the time she was born took it upon herself to lead her people in their demand for better treatment from the government they live under . At 14 years old ,Sonia was already leading marches and being arrested under threat of deportation to Haiti for demanding better conditions for Dominican born Haitian Sugar Cane Cutters and that's not even the half of it .

Sonia has been punched in the face and even chased out of her office by pistol waving punks but as Haitian activist , Pat Beauvais tells it , " Sonia was the one who founded MUDHA , The Movement for Dominican Women of Haitian Descent  " and "she used her organization to fight anti Haitian sentiment in the Dominican Republic " . Ms. Beauvais went on to say that , " So many Haitian born children in the Dominican Republic don't have an identity and Sonia is the one who fought tirelessly against the government to change that  . She will truly be missed . In 2006 , Sonia Pierre was recognized and honored for her lifes work by the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights , with an award for fighting Discriminatory policies that violate the rights of Dominicans of Haitian descent .

In 2010 La Señora Pierre was again honored but this time , it was First Lady , Michelle Obama, and Secretary of State , Hillary Clinton who gave her the 2010 International Women of Courage Award at the United States Department of State . Sonia ,once , when interviewed , famously said , " I am not a critic of my country , this IS my country , I AM a critic of my government . " By now EVERYBODY who reads TheBochinche , knows how we do when a Great Latino Light passes on...... EVERYBODY , please close your eyes and bow your head while raising your right Power Fist in the air as we give a moment of silence and respect for the loss of the GREAT , Sonia Pierre , WE are ALL worse off for her passing ...............
